Traditional Islamic school (Tsangaya) teachers, have rejected the conference held yesterday aimed at reforming the future of almajirai (The school pupils), saying the plan will not succeed.
They called the initiative a project by a Western-educated contractor seeking financial gain from the Katsina state government, which he has achieved.
They asked, how much was spent and what was actually achieved?
The teachers made these remarks during a visit to the Katsina Times office on Tuesday morning.
They said the program is 98% made up of scholars from a particular sect who have long opposed the almajiri system of education.
They added that those gathered have spent years branding them and their ancestors as infidels.
The teachers also stated that 99% of the speakers at the conference are not from Katsina state—they do not know its people, culture, or customs.
They emphasized that all over Nigeria, no place has a richer history of Islamic religious learning than Katsina.
Therefore, they called on the Katsina government to review a book titled “Islam and History of Learning in Katsina,” published by Dr. Tsiga and Abdallah thirty years ago, in order to understand Katsina’s identity in terms of Islamic education, instead of listening to some outsiders lecturing them on how to proceed with the Islamiceducation.
